Somerset Place in Bath 1942

sue4472

I love to see interpretations of Bath from other artists.

This is Somerset Place by John Piper 1903–1992. Painted in 1942 it shows the impact of bombing on this iconic terrace. Piper was an official war artist in World War II and his wartime depictions of bomb-damaged churches and landmarks, made Piper a household name and led to his work being acquired by several public collections.

His abstract art reflects a wider tendency in the 1930s and onward to evolve a distinctive British strand of modernism.

This picture is in Tate London.
